The Art of the Reed Diffuser: How to Care for Yours and Make It Last
A reed diffuser is one of the most effortless ways to scent your home — no flame, no timer, no fuss. But a little care goes a long way. Follow this guide to get the most from every bottle in our
1. Choose the Right Location
Placement is everything. For the best scent throw:
- Do place your diffuser in a hallway, bathroom, or bedroom — areas with gentle airflow that carry the fragrance naturally through the space.
- Don't position it directly in front of an air vent, open window, or radiator. Excessive airflow or heat accelerates evaporation and shortens the life of your diffuser significantly.
- Avoid direct sunlight, which can degrade the fragrance oil and discolour the liquid over time.
A mid-height surface — a shelf, side table, or console — tends to diffuse scent most evenly throughout a room.
2. Flip Your Reeds Regularly (But Not Too Often)
When you first set up your diffuser, flip all the reeds so the dry ends sit in the oil. After that:
- Flip once or twice a week for a consistent, moderate scent.
- Flip more frequently if you want a stronger burst of fragrance — ideal for larger rooms or before guests arrive.
- Flip less often to extend the life of your diffuser in smaller spaces.
Each flip saturates the reeds and releases a fresh wave of fragrance. Handle the reeds over a cloth or tissue — the oil can mark surfaces.
3. Know When to Replace Your Reeds
Reeds become saturated with dust and dried oil over time and lose their ability to draw fragrance upward. Signs it's time for fresh reeds:
- The scent has noticeably weakened despite regular flipping.
- The reeds look discoloured, clogged, or brittle.
As a rule of thumb, replace reeds when you refill your diffuser oil — this ensures optimal performance from the start.
4. Top Up, Don't Throw Away
When your oil runs low, consider a refill rather than replacing the entire diffuser. This is both more economical and more sustainable. When topping up:
- Use the same fragrance to maintain scent consistency.
- Clean the vessel with warm soapy water and allow it to dry completely before refilling.
- Always use fresh reeds with a new fill.
5. Match Your Diffuser to the Room Size
Not all diffusers are created equal — and neither are rooms.
- Smaller spaces (bathrooms, hallways): one diffuser with 4–5 reeds is plenty.
- Medium rooms (bedrooms, home offices): use all reeds provided, or opt for a larger bottle.
- Open-plan living areas: consider layering two diffusers with complementary or matching scents for even coverage.

- Keep the stopper or cap on tightly.
- Store upright in a cool, dark place — a cupboard or drawer works well.
